Attractions in the Helderberg

The Helderberg basin is one of the most visually dramatic areas in the Cape, with the Hottentots Holland and Helderberg Mountain ranges creating a powerful backdrop against which the valley descends into vineyards, and finally onto a coastline swept with warm waters and effortlessly white, sandy beaches.

Beaches and Swimming

Walks, watersports, sunsets, surfing, swimming, sunbathing, photography, coastal drives, quaint harbours and so much more to do.

A Round Trip

A drive from Gordon’s Bay through to Hermanus and back to Somerset West over the Sir Lowry’s mountain pass is an absolute must. We reckon that this is the most scenic coastal drive in the world!

Whale Watching

Between June and December each year, the False Bay coastline is visited by hundreds of Southern Right Whales.

Charter Cruises

View the Helderberg from the deck of a boat: cruises leave daily from Gordon’s Bay Harbour and Harbour Island.

Steenbras Dam

The 4km road from Gordon’s Bay to the dam situated on top of the Hottentots Holland mountain range offers magnificent views of the Helderberg. The dam is surrounded by 1200 hectares of pine plantations within which lie several secluded picnic areas, braai spots and even overnight accommodation. The waters are stocked with trout and fishing is allowed with a permit.

Butterfly World

Just half an hour from Oceana Palms you’ll find the largest butterfly park in Africa, where butterflies fly freely in a beautiful covered tropical garden. This trip is a must for all tourists.

Wineland Tours

Oceana Palms is located 20 km from the Stellenbosch Winelands boundary where the Helderberg and Boland Winelands meet and overlap.

Golf

The Helderberg boasts three 18-hole golf courses: Erinvale, Somerset West and Strand. If golf is your game, you are spoiled for choice. Somerset West has truly magnificent golf courses where you can enjoy a day of sporting excellence in a picturesque setting.

Shark Cage Diving

Coming face to face with a Great White Shark is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It makes for an exciting day trip from Oceana Palms, leaving early in the morning and returning in the evening. An adrenaline rush like no other!

Helderberg Nature Reserve

Open 7 days a week, this is one of the natural treasures of the Helderberg: a nature-lover’s paradise of fynbos and birds. Scenic walks range in intensity from gentle to longer routes for the more energetic. The reserve also has an information center and a very popular restaurant.

Eco-tours

Take a quad bike or motorbike ride along the trail in the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve. 1600 plant species grow in this magnificent area alone. Because the routes have been designed by nature conservation personnel it is a must for the adventure lover.

Horse Riding Trails

A horse lover’s paradise, the area provides opportunities to take in trails between mountains, sea, vineyards and nature reserves, as well as offering horse rides on the beach. Those who ride will experience a truly memorable Cape adventure.

Caledon Spa and Casino

Travel over the beautiful Sir Lowry’s mountain pass to the natural warm-water spa which caters for day visitors. Visit the Caledon Casino, and end your day with a meal at one of the restaurants before heading home.

Day Trips

We can arrange day trips to Paarl, Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Cape Town, False Bay, Cape Point Nature Reserve and the Overberg. Crystal Pools are close by.
